Do You Listen Or Are You Present?

Do you listen or are you present?

If you’re a man, you have probably heard the question, “are you even listening to me?”, at least a few million times. Am I right?

Normally we answer “yes, I was”, and then blurt out something they said like ten minutes ago.

Now truth be told, by the definition of “listening”, we probably were. Listening refers to the act of actively receiving and interpreting sound waves. (I highly suggest you DO NOT use this with your significant other though) It won’t end well.

The better question that should be asked is something like, “are you even here?” That question alludes to whether or not you are present.

You see, being present involves being fully engaged and attentive. In other words, it involves giving your full attention to the person and the situation. Setting aside distractions and focusing on the conversation at that moment.

It involves being aware of your surroundings, your emotions, and your thoughts, without judgment.

What are some of the benefits of being present? Let’s look at a few of them.

👉 An Improved Understanding:

Being present involves not just listening to the words being said, but it also requires you to observe body language and other nonverbal cues.

👉 Greater Communication:

When you are truly present, the other person feels like they are truly being heard and understood. They are more likely to open up and communicate more effectively.

👉 A more stable, strengthened, and deeper relationship:

By being fully present, you communicate to others that they are important to you.

👉 Less Stress:

Being focused on the here and now can help reduce stress and anxiety. Focusing on the moment and not about what has already happened or what might happen in the future will save you.

👉 Increased Creativity:

Undoubtedly, being present allows our minds to be fully engaged in the moment, which can lead to increased creativity as well as our problem-solving capabilities.

Now that you know the difference, if you are brave, ask someone close to you what type of listener they think you are. Then when they laugh, you can implement the steps above and really blow them away.
