What Do You Do When You Are Misunderstood?

Misunderstood

“What do you do when you are misunderstood?”

Misunderstandings happen all the time in life.

Family, friends, work, there is no area of your life that is immune.

Frustration is one of the most common emotions we feel when this happens.

When you feel like you've explained yourself clearly, but the other person still doesn't understand your perspective.

❓What do you do? Get angry?
Feel resentful? Get defensive?❓

Maybe you turn inward and become sad. This situation makes you feel like the other person doesn't care about you, they don’t value your feelings, your thoughts, or your opinions.

Maybe you start feeling rejected, lonely, even depressed. Anxiety and stress kick in.

We all want to be understood, on the same page, not having our words be taken out of context.

So, what can we do? How can you deal with these thoughts and feelings?

👉 Communicate openly and honestly.

👉 Ask for clarity. Why they feel the way they do.

👉 Listen to the other person's perspective and try to find common ground.

👉 Take the time to explain your thoughts and feelings in a calm and respectful manner.

Know that sometimes, people will hear what you say or read what you wrote and it triggers something in their past. Their only response is to attack in disagreement, calling you names and accusingly question your character.

At this point, after you have tried to resolve the situation, remove yourself, wish them well, and then engaging in activities that bring you joy and happiness.

I promise, this will help you manage stress and anxiety and feel more grounded and centered.

Remember, being misunderstood is a natural part of communication and relationships. Instead of dwelling on the negative emotions, try to focus on finding solutions and moving forward in a positive way.

Finally, we are all human and can take things out of context very easily. When this happens for me, before I respond, I rely on the words found in Proverbs 18:13

“If one gives an answer before he hears,it is his folly and shame.”
