What would you rather have, knowledge or wisdom?

This discussion came up in a coaching conversation so I wanted to take a moment and consider the differences and similarities.

Many people seek to obtain all the knowledge they can. Degree after degree, certification after certification. Believing that obtaining all this knowledge will make them successful.

Let me break this down.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Knowledge is the accumulation of information and facts.

๐Ÿ‘‰ You gain knowledge through educational learning and/or work related experience.

While having knowledge is a really good thing, possessing knowledge alone is not enough.

In others words; knowledge is โ€œbook smartโ€ while wisdom is โ€œstreet smart.โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge and experience to make good judgments and decisions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Wisdom involves a deeper understanding of the world and the ability to apply knowledge in practical and meaningful ways.

As we get older, we often think of growing into maturity and gaining more knowledge. However growing mature in wisdom transcends age.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Wisdom is a key aspect of maturity.

You see, wisdom grows when we learn to apply our knowledge to everyday choices and situations.

In other words, knowledge is the raw material, while wisdom is the ability to use that material effectively.

I believe that there are many people who possess knowledge, yet have no wisdom, while there are many who are wise beyond their years.

As I often do, I turn to scripture to see what God says about things. When it comes to wisdom here is something I found.

James 1:5

Wisdom can and will be given to those who seek it, with or without knowledge.
