Have you ever self destructed?

Look, I’m a die hard Black and Yellow, all sports Pittsburgh fan. Pirates, Penguins and the Steelers, so watching the Chiefs beat the Ravens on Sunday brought me great satisfaction. HOWEVER, I don’t the think the Chiefs beat them…….I think the Ravens beat themselves.

The Ravens had an incredible regular season. They touted the best record, 13-4, and had been favored to go all the way.

But, they will be watching the game the same way most everyone else will be. From home.

So what causes a team to self-destruct? Let’s take a look.

When leaders fail to provide guidance, support, and motivation to the team, it can result in low morale, disengagement, and a lack of direction. So when Lamar Jackson left the field and slammed his helmet to the ground, the message he sent to his team was “it’s over.” A leader should never react that way.

Ineffective communication can result in misunderstandings, confusion, and misaligned expectations. Granted, every team has missed plays. But when their back was against the wall it seemed that broken plays happened one after another.

Egos can often lead to power struggles, lack of cooperation, and a divided team. When Ravens wide receiver Zac Flowers was called for taunting that was 100% uncalled for. He just had an incredible 52 yard catch and run basically nullified because he couldn’t keep himself in check.

Lack of clear goals and roles: If team members are unsure about their roles and responsibilities it can lead to confusion and lack of motivation. Again, Zac Flowers had an opportunity for redemption. A catch and run into the end zone, that was the goal. But, instead of just running in he decided to “showboat” and make it look cool by diving into the end zone. His only mistake was he couldn’t secure the ball, fumbling it before he broke the plane. Then he threw a tantrum on the sidelines and cut his hand when he punched the bench.

External factors such as tight deadlines, high workloads, or organizational changes can put immense stress on a team. If the team is unable to cope with these pressures, it can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and ultimately, self-destruction. In this case, the Ravens defense had been on the field for a majority of the game, they were tired, beat down, but they still made mistakes that could have been avoided. Right after being penalized for 12 men on the field, Ravens linebacker Smith plows into the Chiefs line and gets flagged for 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

How’s your team? Are you prepared and trained to avoid the self destructive behavior?

Congratulations to the Chiefs but, the Ravens are far from over. They are a great team that had a bad day.

Go and make a difference in someone’s life today.
